My book, Shantyboats and Roustabouts: The River Poor of St. Louis, 1875-1930 (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University, 2022) is the recipient of the Midwestern History Association’s Hamlin Garland Prize in Popular History. I’m honored to receive the award, and I want to thank the prize committee for its selection. Here is a brief excerpt from the committee’s endorsement of the book:
“This is a superb contribution to many fields, not only Midwest History, and is a vital example of building history from the ground up.”
