  1. Obviously this is something to read – mainly because I don’t understand the image on the cover. BOOTS and CHAINS isn’t an image I can get my arms around.

    1. Hi, Faye. The image cover is a 1905 picture of a prisoner in the old St. Louis workhouse. I cropped the picture, which appeared in a St. Louis newspaper. LSU Press’s cover designer did the rest. I think you’ll find the book as eye opening as I did when I researched and wrote it.
